Who We Are
The London Waterloo Local History Society (WLHS)
We are a group (a mailing list of over 100 people) who meet 3 to 4 times a year for walks, talks and the opportunity to sharing research. There is a small management group made up of 5 people who look after the finances and create and manage an events programme.
Where We Are
Our area of historical focus is the triangle of land bordering on the south side of the River Thames between Lambeth Bridge, Lambeth Road and Blackfriars Bridge, Blackfriars Road meeting at St George’s Circus. Inevitably surrounding areas may well be included to make sense of the research being carried out.
What We Do
We investigate, record and make accessible the complex and stimulating story over time of Waterloo and its neighbourhood: the people, buildings, places and events that have shaped the area over time. We have created links with St John's Church, Waterloo as contributors to their Summer festival; Lambeth Local History Forum by attending meetings ; Lambeth Tour Guides (based at Morley College) with whom we have shared Walks and Speakers.
We have liaised with Lambeth Palace Library and Archives, British Film Institute, National Theatre Archives, The Garden History Museum. In recent years we have selected themes such as Housing, Open Spaces, Health and Entertainment to help focus our activities and to establish a data base for individuals to use and add to.
